Shift Health Publishes “Tackling Healthcare Access Barriers for Individuals with Autism from Diagnosis to Adulthood” Article In Pediatric Research.

We uncover important steps that stakeholders can take to improve healthcare service provision and enhance healthcare access for all individuals with ASD.

We are pleased to announce our recent publication in Nature’s Pediatric Research. The article is entitled, “Tackling Healthcare Access Barriers for Individuals with Autism from Diagnosis to Adulthood”. 

Despite the growing body of evidence, our understanding of barriers to healthcare encountered by individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) remains limited, particularly beyond childhood and outside higher resource countries.

For this work, Shift Health had the pleasure of collaborating with leaders in the field—Dr. Suzanne Lewis, Autism Canada, University of British Columbia and BC Children’s Hospital Research Institute; Dr. Joaquin Fuentes, Policlínica Gipuzkoa and GAUTENA Autism Society; Dr. Thomas W. Frazier, Autism Speaks—to synthesize available evidence, present an integrated understanding of healthcare needs and barriers, and highlight gaps in our knowledge.  

Our review outlines the top six barriers to healthcare access encountered by autistic individuals throughout the lifespan. To deepen our understanding of this complex issue, we also explore  the barriers that exist during specific life stages including childhood, transition to adulthood, and adulthood. Importantly, we uncover important steps that stakeholders can take to improve healthcare service provision and enhance healthcare access for all individuals with ASD.
